INFORMATION FOR NEW BOWLERS As the largest GLBTI bowling league in Australia, Sydney Rams has a long and extensive history of providing a safe and enjoyable space for sport and social activity. We hope that your time with us will be both long and satisfying. A little bit about Rams Rams was founded by the late Geoff Perkins and a number of foundation members at Rushcutter bowl in 1983. Initially a “male only” league, Rams was formed as an alternative to the bar scene for gay men who wished to enjoy the sport of tenpin as well as have a social outlet. Rams have also hosted the annual bowling tournament at Mardi Gras for many years and many of the Rams members were heavily involved in the running of the 2002 Gay Games bowling tournament in Sydney. A number of members have won various State and National League titles as well as representing the State in National Teams Competitions. Many of us have competed overseas in various Gay and Out Games, as well as IGBO tournaments throughout the world. Although we are primarily a GLBTI league our membership is now open to all people regardless of gender, sexual identity, race, religion etc. We have a mixture of ages and bowling expertise and bowlers of all levels are welcome. How to join us Rams reforms for a new season each January. We usually hold our reformation meeting on the last Monday of January at 7:00 PM at Manhattan Bowl. If you have a full team of 4 people just turn up and we can slot you into our schedule. If you are by yourself or have less than 4 people, come along and we will fit you into a team or help you fill the one you have formed. We also have provisions for accepting new teams during the year. We allow for roving reserves so even if you cannot commit to a team you can still bowl with Rams. We also welcome casual bowlers and visitors from interstate and overseas. Our basic playing Rules We bowl almost every Monday night at 8.00PM sharp. A full league schedule will be provided to your team captain. All of our teams are made up of 4 bowlers. This may be a mixture of male/female or one gender only and with any mix of expertise. We generally play two “rounds” of around 15 weeks each. Our schedule begins in late January or early February and finishes on the last Monday night of November. This is a “handicapped” league and all teams have an equal chance of winning. For further details of how the handicap and points system works, please speak with one of the committee. We play three games per week as well as having some “fun” nights throughout the year. As with any organised game of sport, there are some basic rules and regulations that apply to all people regardless of level. There are etiquette rules as well as rules of the game. As a new bowler you don't have to worry about the rules before you bowl. There will always be someone playing on the same or nearby lanes who will be very willing to guide you. Really, most bowling procedure is common sense and the scoring is all done electronically so nothing to worry about there either!. Our Committee and Board of Directors The league is governed by the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Each team is required to select a team Captain who then becomes a member of the Board of Directors (BoD). In conjunction with the Executive Committee the BoD ensures that the league runs smoothly and complies with our playing rules and constitution. If you would like a copy of the Constitution, please speak with our Secretary. In 2007 the Executive Committee is comprised of:: President - Ron Langham 0416 087 316 Vice-President - Denise Sebastian Secretary - Dave Randall 0409 999 922 Treasurer - Lyndon Gaskin Social Secretary - David Rolfe The executive committee is elected each year at our annual general meeting, usually conducted on the last night of bowling in November. Our Social Events Each year Rams conducts a number of social events. The biggest, and most anticipated, is our annual Presentation night, usually held very early in December. At this event we present trophies to all our league winners as well as enjoy a sumptuous dinner and “show” from many of our more talented members (!) We also often conduct picnics, bus-trips, and our annual Charity Bingo night to fundraise for GLBTI charities. For the last 11 years we have donated the proceeds of this night to “Manna on Sunday”, a charitable work of the Metropolitan Community Church. In that time we have raised close to $18,000. In conclusion Sydney Rams is a fun and social bowling league. We are committed to providing a safe space for our community regardless of background. Your committee is committed to being an open and consultative one and we welcome your feedback and questions. If there is any way in which you feel we can improve the league, please speak with us. In return we ask only that you remember that all committee members are volunteers. Sadly, we cannot be all things to all people, and not all requests or suggestions can be accommodated. You can be assured though that your concerns, suggestions etc will be given full consideration by the committee. All said and done, join us to HAVE FUN! So ENJOY! |
